Stormy Weather

Stormy weather...How to decrease stress in the winter

When the weather is dark, cold and gloomy many of the things we do to reduce stress become more difficult. There is less natural light; walking outside or getting to favorite activities becomes more difficult; and we often see less of our friends and family.

Try a few of these tips to keep your stress level down in the winter months:

  • Keep it light! Spending even a few minutes outside can help. Keep window shades and curtains open during the day. Turn lights on earlier in the day. Replace dark lampshades with lighter colors.
  • Exercise can be a stress buster. If you cannot go out, try exercising at home. Walking in place, taking the stairs, using a pedometer while doing chores or using exercise video tapes are a few ways to stay active at home.
  • Stay in touch. Calling a friend or family member on those days when you cannot get out of the house keeps you connected to your supports.
  • Try a new hobby. Have you ever wanted to learn to knit or build model airplanes? The winter is a great time to experiment with something new.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Keep low calorie snacks on hand. Try some new recipes from health magazines or the Internet to add variety.

Try some of these tips to keep stress at bay during the winter months!
